What is eSeal?

eSeal is a free electronic signature service built for the European Union. It produces PAdES B-T signatures (PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures, baseline profile with timestamp) that qualify as Simple Electronic Signatures (SES) under eIDAS Regulation (EU) 910/2014 — legally valid and admissible across all 27 EU member states.

Every signature is embedded in the PDF itself using ETSI-standard PAdES B-T, then timestamped via an RFC 3161 trusted timestamp authority. You can verify any eSeal-signed document with the ETSI PAdES conformance checker — the European standards body's own tool.

SES, AES, QES — what's the difference?

eIDAS defines three tiers of electronic signature. Simple Electronic Signature (SES) is legally valid for most commercial contracts — NDAs, SOWs, consulting agreements, employment contracts. Advanced Electronic Signature (AES) adds signer-certificate binding and is required for higher-value contracts. Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) is the legal equivalent of a handwritten signature and requires a certificate from a Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP).

eSeal currently offers SES-tier signing, free. AES and QES tiers are planned.

Why EU-sovereign matters

eSeal runs entirely on European infrastructure — no AWS, no Google Cloud, no Azure, no US-owned service in the stack. Documents are stored on a Hostinger VPS in Lithuania, processed by Mistral (French AI), and delivered via Resend (EU-compliant). Under the US CLOUD Act, data on US-owned infrastructure can be subpoenaed regardless of where the servers physically sit. EU-sovereign means it can't be.
